The only "walking" you do is fast and involves the worldmap when you go from kingdom to kingdom, or village to village, castle-keep to castle-keep. You want to go to the kings castle? hit tab, and select kings castle. There is no tiresome walking all over the map (like traditional MMO's just to suck your life away on repetitive lame quests). You can chat to troubadours for the latest gossip between the kingdoms and use that to your advantage.

You can go to tournaments and compete, and attend feasts where lords attend with their wives, and debute their daughters who have come of age. You can be a bad ♥♥♥ brigand or shining honorable hero. As you travel the land, you can trade, rescue villages, do favours for lords, try to court a noble lady. So you better have your warband with you, which you can order about on the battlefield to a limited degree. Any more than that and you will die (they just surround you and beat you to a pulp :). 1v3, you better be high level and your shield defense good, wearing steel armor. So in 1v1 your character can kick the ♥♥♥ of anyone. i would really like a "sprint" mechanic). The combat mechanics are good enough (there is always room for improvement. Reputation matters as your deeds change this throughout the game, and all this is remembered by the npcs to a degree. The higher your renown the more you can interact with the rulers of the kingdoms, and thus get closer to your goal of "world domination". This all goes faster than one might expect. So anyway, you work your way up, building your wealth, capability and size of your army (and even gaining some heroic companions), and renown, competing/or co-operating with the AI kingdoms. But likewise since you are in control of your character it's also easy to be smart and not die, you just have to be prudent. When you level you mostly level sideways (getting more skills, etc). What makes Mount&Blade interesting is that all the kingdoms are pursuing their own AI dreams of being king of the land, so the political landscape changes in realtime. thousands of hours wasted on a "static" world.just so you can multiplayer!? There are better multiplayer games that don't require the tedium of MMOs. And the storys are often dull and forgettable with only the endless grind to achieve, just so you can reach the max level, and apparently it's claimed."the the real game begins in PVP". in the most popular MMO's, like WOW or SWTOR, levels mean nothing. (This goal also takes less of your time to achieve than boring MMO's where nothing means anything. And yes, its a fun challenge with a rpg feel to it, except the world is independent of you, and the political winds follow their own course randomly from game to game, so no two games feel the same. There are multiple routes you can go to achieve this. The goal is to see how far up hierachy in medieval setting you can rise, and perhaps eventually even be king. It is very much a "game", almost arcade like, in that there is a clear goal. It's not a story campaign with a thousand backstories, and side quests. And suddenly it becomes clear what the game is about.

If you persisted for a couple hours (the demo is the same as the full game, so its a good test) you realized that the world is alive, and doing its own thing. you'll likely be thinking this game is crap, and bin it. It's actually a case of "there is NO story". Many reviewers have noted this, but i just figured, they meant the story is bad. What follows soon after is the realization that there is no story. (although reading is arguably better than listening to bad or unvaried voice acting) I've gotten so used to voice acting in other single player games, that having to actually read what the npcs say is like slap in the face :) and there is a LOT to read :) and without voice acting, a world feels a little bit less alive :( and certainly behind contemporaries, BUT the in-game art for the load screens, etc are superb and help set a good visual mood. I'll talk about the bad first, since this is what will hit you first. first stage: this game is crap, followed by a second stage: this game is very cool. I'm writing this because i went thru two stages as i played the demo. Buy Warband for your medieval experience choice.

Which do you buy for the medieval experience, vanilla or Warband?Ī member of the helpful community explained that Warband is the place to start (it has all the same content as vanilla mount and blade plus a bit of polish and the multiplayer ofcourse). When the specials came out the other day, i considered buying them.įirst thing first. I'm writing this for newcomers who are still deciding if this game is any good.
